Tiivistelmä
The aim of this research-based thesis is to analyze if covid-19 pandemic has influenced people’s motives and behavior towards events. The main research question that this thesis aims to answer is how the covid-19 pandemic has influenced people’s motives towards events. The sub questions to support the main research question are: 1. How the covid-19 pandemic has influenced people’s behavior towards events and is there differences with the behavior now versus before 2. Are hybrid events good and what makes them good or bad? Questions are considered from the public’s point of view. The thesis process begun in February 2022 and finished in May 2022.
The thesis begins with a theoretical framework in which the key concepts and background information are being studied and explained. It includes basic information about covid-19 pandemic, what it is, where it came from, what the covid-19 situation is globally and in Fin-land, categorization and characteristics of events, information about online and hybrid events, and the role of events in the Finnish economy as well as theory on motivation and why people attend events
The research method used in this thesis is quantitative. The data was collected with a questionnaire that was conducted during the process of the thesis. The questionnaire was shared as a public link to two social media platforms to reach respondents as much as possible. Data collection was made during one week period.
Based on the results of the questionnaire covid-19 pandemic has had some influence on people’s motives and behavior towards events. For example, the amount of participation to events has decreased from pre-covid times and people feel hesitant about attending them. For some, the pandemic has impacted them and their motives in a way that they are or want to start attending events more than before to support the event industry. As for the hybrid events, they are described as being good and interesting. It is said that they give an opportunity to experience and attend different events. As for what makes them bad is that they are boring, people there are not as social as in in-person events and that hybrid events do not have the same feeling as live events do and the experience feels different.
As the whole covid-19 pandemic and its effects on economy and human mind and behavior is relatively new it would be beneficial to continue research about it since there will be new and long-term effects not yet detected coming as the pandemic continues. The pandemic will keep on re-shaping the event industry and new trends and ways to hold events will emerge as the industry needs to adapt to the changes.
