The construction industry evolves rapidly, and the reliance on the latest visualization technology increases. One of the currently used visualization methods is Building Information Modeling (BIM). However, there are gaps in BIM use that need to be filled. Mixed Reality could upgrade the process by boosting the visualization from 3 dimensional visualization on a 2D screen to real time interaction with a 3D model in real space. Therefore, this paper aims to explore different aspects of Mixed Reality technology and provide a clear and comprehensive understanding for construction companies worldwide about the potential of this technology to enhance decision-making processes in the construction field.
This research uses qualitative data collection methods such as questionnaires and interviews to point out some of the general issues in the industry, BIM limitations, and, most importantly, Mixed Reality applications, benefits, and challenges from real company cases. The findings present common problems and some BIM use limitations in the construction field. Furthermore, the results include several Mixed Reality practical applications such as design review and assembly assistant, which can lead to some benefits, for example, high information gain, smooth feedback collection, and proactive problem-solving. However, challenges like knowledge, cost, time, and hardware capability could limit the applications and benefits of Mixed Reality in construction.
Ultimately, the paper answers the research questions by highlighting the key applications, benefits, and challenges that have a correlation with decision making. Moreover, the study presents expected costs for adopting Mixed Reality and how profitable this technology is in the construction field. Lastly, the report identifies the research limitations and proposes future recommendations for further studies.
