This thesis has been carried out on the behalf of Mirka Ltd during the autumn of 2021 and spring of 2022. The work addresses sanding and polishing of smartphone screens using a collaborative robot. Theory of robotics, the structure and function of robots are presented.
The restoration of electronic screens is becoming increasingly common and the demand for used, restored phones is constantly growing. Restoring the phone screen instead of replacing it saves time and money and is also much more sustainable from an environmental perspective.
Within the company there is already a manual restoration process where the defects of the screens are sanded away and polished by hand. This process is difficult to perform and a robotic application that would replace the human effort was requested. The aim of the thesis was to verify whether the existing restoration process could be automated using a collaborative robot and thus simplify, improve and speed up the restoration process of phone screens.
A robotic application using a Universal Robots collaborative robot and a dispensing system was designed to replace the manual restoration process. Using the Universal Robots teach pendant, an application was developed that first sands away the defects of the phone screen and then polishes the screen in two different polishing steps back to its original shine.
The result of the thesis is a functional robotic application that restores phone screens that have defects in the glass. The robotic application doses appropriate amounts of abrasives and polishing agents and sands and polishes away the defects of the phone screen. The successful result allows the robotic application to be used in similar projects or for expansion to multiple phone models and other electronics screens.
