The aim of the study was to find out how to search and protect gallinaceous bird (Capercaillie, Black Grouse, Hazel Grouse and Willow Grouse) nests and what should be taken into account during the process. The purpose was also to study how widely and in what way gallinaceous bird nests have been searched and protected previously in different parts of Finland with the help of pointing dogs, and if this kind of work is still done. The client of the work was Häme University of Applied Sciences.
The study has three parts: a literature study, a survey, and field work in the Evo area. The literature study focused on research and instructions on how to search and protect gallinaceous bird nests in Finland as well as on the need to protect these nests. The survey was directed to members of local pointing dog associations in different parts of Finland, and pointing dog enthusiasts experienced in searching and protecting nests were interviewed. The search for nests in the Evo area was conducted in two areas of the Evo educational forest allotted to prescribed burning and in four areas of the State-owned forestry company (Metsähallitus), the total area of which covered approximately 110 hectares. The area was searched with the help of one pointing dog from May to June 2021. All of the areas were searched twice and some of the areas were later additionally checked with a different dog.
The survey revealed that co-operation between pointing dog enthusiasts and forestry operators has taken place, especially in the early 2000s. However, the interviewed enthusiasts state that searching of nests is no longer carried out in large scale. On the other hand, they indicated that there would still be interest in searching for nests. However, the work should be organized by some organisation. No nests were found in the Evo area, although the areas appeared in general to be suitable habitats for gallinaceous birds. The data collected from literature and the survey were summarized as guidelines for searching and protecting gallinaceous bird nests.
In the future, it would be useful to study why the earlier co-operation projects ended and whether or not forest companies would be willing to continue co-operation in searching and protecting gallinaceous bird nests. The survey was limited only to pointing dog enthusiasts, but in the future those working within the forest sector could also be asked whether or not they have experience in protecting nests and if they have an estimate on how many nests are destroyed during forest management measures.
