A Process Model for Building an International Partner Network

Abstract

Tämän opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli luoda prosessimalli kansainvälisen kumppaniverkoston rakentamiseksi. Prosessimallia kehitettiin hyödyntämällä teoreettista viitekehystä sekä toimintatutkimusta ja konstruktiivista tutkimusta. Kehitetty prosessimalli testattiin tosielämän tilanteissa, ja osallistavan havainnoinnin sekä tutkimuksen avulla tämän opinnäytetyön lopputuloksena synti prosessimallin versio 2.0. Tämä opinnäytetyö toteutettiin Haaga-Helia ammattikorkeakoulun Service Experience Laboratory LAB8:lle, joka on erittäin kokenut kansainvälisissä (enimmäkseen eurooppalaisista) hankkeissa. Vaikka LAB8:lla on laaja kokemus monenlaisista kansainvälisistä tutkimus- ja kehittämisprojekteista, se ei kuitenkaan ollut vielä saanut rahoitusta Euroopan merkittävimmiltä rahoituslaitoksilta, erityisesti Horisontti 2020:lta. Tämä Euroopan komission hallinnoima rahoitusinstrumentti toteaa säännöissään, että rahoituksen edellytyksenä on organisaation aiempi kokemus kyseisestä instrumentista rahoitetusta hankkeesta. Tämä tarkoitti käytännössä uusien kumppaneiden löytämistä, joten LAB8 päätti luoda prosessimallin kansainvälisen kumppaniverkoston rakentamiseksi. Tämän opinnäytetyön teoreettinen viitekehys on yhdistelmä kansainvälistymis- ja verkostoitumisteorioita. Kuten teoreettista viitekehystä koskevissa luvuissa esitetään, kaikki nämä teoriat liittyvät toisiinsa. Teorioiden väliset yhteydet esitetään myös luvun lopussa olevassa kuvassa. Tämä opinnäytetyö tehtiin toimintatutkimuksen ja konstruktiivisen tutkimuksen yhdistelmänä. Tarkempia tutkimusmenetelmiä olivat osallistuva havainnointi ja kysely. Näiden tutkimusmenetelmien avulla kehitettiin tämän opinnäytetyön lopputulos, prosessimalli kansainvälisen kumppaniverkoston rakentamiseksi.

The objective of this thesis is to create a process model for building an international partner network. The process model was developed by utilizing a theoretical framework as well as action research and constructive research as research approaches. The process model was tested in real-life situations and through participatory observation and survey, a version 2.0 of the process model was created as an end result of this thesis. The case company of this thesis, Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences Service Experience Laboratory LAB8, is highly experienced in international (mostly European) project collaborations. However, even though LAB8 has vast experience in many types of international research and development projects, it has yet to receive funding from the most prominent funding institutions in Europe. As this funding institution, called Horizon 2020 and managed by the European commission, stated in their rules that in order for an organization to receive funding from the instrument, it requires the organization to have received previous funding from the same instrument. Since this meant having to find new partners with such experience to collaborate with, LAB8 set out to create a process model for building an international partner network. The theoretical framework of this thesis is a combination of internationalization and networking theories. As presented in the chapters concerning the theoretical framework, all the theories presented are linked with each other in one form or another. The linkages between the theories are also presented in a figure at the end of the chapter. This thesis was conducted with action research and constructive research as research approaches. The more specific research methods included participatory observation and survey. The end-result of this thesis, a process model for building an international partner network, was developed through these research methods.
