Tiivistelmä
Sustainability in the hotel industry is becoming progressively important. The sustainable practices of a hotel might be considered as crucial nowadays among travellers. But is it always clear for travellers whether a hotel operates in a sustainable way and whether the hotel provides sustainable stays?

There are plenty of green labels worldwide for buildings, hotels and other companies. In this thesis the following three sustainable programs will be discussed: Green Key, Green Globe and BREEAM. These three companies are examples of businesses that award hotels and buildings with sustainable certificates. These businesses’ organizational bodies are used for knowledge, inspiration and relevancy for a new sustainable program called The Green Star Project.

The Green Star Project is a sustainable concept created and developed by the author of this bachelor thesis. The strategy, guidelines and criteria of this project are derived from the 17 global goals and from the companies Green Key, Green Globe and BREEAM. This innovative sustainable program is about the visibility and importance of hotels’ sustainable practices. Online travel agencies are not obviously showing the sustainability and the certificates of the hotels on their booking websites and The Green Star Project wants to change this problem.

In the hotel industry a lot of water, energy and other limited resources are used to make the guests as satisfied as possible and this goes together with a lot of waste. The ecological footprint of the hotel industry will be discussed and how hotels and the environment can benefit from green labels.

Research methods that are used during this thesis are secondary research, online interviews and business norms and values. The online interviews that are shown in this thesis are held with four different managers from Van Der Valk Hotels in the Netherlands. The conclusion of this entire research will follow and will be about how green labels exactly work on a more sustainable stay, why this sustainability is becoming more important for tourists, how hotels and the environment can benefit from The Green Star project and lastly, whether The Green Star Project could be a good sustainable program in the hotel industry.
