Cosplay : from concept to completion

Abstract

This paper examines the creation of a complete cosplay costume based on reference pictures as well as introducing traditional Chinese clothing patterning and how these patterns can be used as a base for this type of costume. The thesis focuses on how the writer uses readily available materials and historical research to balance accuracy to the costume of the character with reasonable costs in time and money through the lens of creating a costume of Wei Wuxian of The Untamed. To do this, reference material must be gathered, patterns created, and materials purchased first. Decisions on what materials and how to put the pieces together are also discussed. The outcome is a physical product, as in a complete cosplay costume with accessories and a wig, as well as the creator’s final thoughts on the process.
