Tiivistelmä
During the past years Performance Appraisals have been a sensitive topic for organizations in a variety of different industries all over the World. There are ongoing debates about their efficiency, positive and negative aspects, and different ways to replace traditional Performance Appraisals. Neither management, nor employees are satisfied with the system that they have at the moment. Even though performance appraisal is one of the most extensively researched topics in work psychology, the ideal method of appraisals is not found yet.
Meanwhile, it has been scientifically proven that gamification (use of game mechanics in non-game environment) can affect people’s behaviour in a huge variety of ways. Use of gamified elements in Performance Management can potentially eliminate the downsides of tradition Performance Appraisal, make it more fun and increase the overall employee wellbeing.
This thesis is investigating what are the downsides of tradition performance appraisal process in Hotel Industry in Finland and attempts to find out the way to improve it with the help of applying gamification.
The author of this thesis hopes that it will draw attention to the topic of gamification, encourage hotel industry organizations to experiment and to try to gain advantage of this modern tool in developing their Human Resources.
