The purpose of the thesis work is to provide Swedish support material for students in Arcada and also reduce the threshold for making one familiar with the Linux operation system. In the first part of my work I will present the Linux file structure and user rights and also the basics of the command prompt and script programming.
The second part deals with the most common services and software one most often in-stalls in a Linux server. These services are file sharing, maintenance software for the server and web server services. The thesis focues on going through the installation and configuration processes in detail with that in mind that the students who might be using this support material are not so aware about all the different functions in the Linux operation system.
The information in this thesis is based on literature study about Linux and on practise to install and configure different services and programs. The practical examples presented in this thesis are all made with Ubuntu which is the most common distribution of Linux. In these practical examples I have paid attention to security aspects also. The goal is that the support material will be published on a Wiki page, available to both students and teachers in Arcada, which can be updated when needed.
