Suurimpana haasteena rihmastomaisessa toiminnassa koettiin ennakoimattomuus. Volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity created by VUCA phenomenon is also affecting IT- industry in Finland. The growing complexity in business environment is emphasizing the role of the business networks. By networking companies are in better positions responding to requirements set by the complex business environment. Companies working together in networks can achieve more together than alone.
Rhizomes include network-like features, and the system represents order among chaotic environments. This abstract theory is a model for operating and thinking. Theory of rhizome has been established by two French philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari in 1970’s. There are six imperative principles for rhizomes: principle of heterogeneity, connections, multiplicity, a-signifying rupture, cartography and decalcomania.
The purpose of the study was to examine whether network members experienced rhizomic features in their network-like business environment. In addition, the study was also aiming to deepen the knowledge of rhizome theory and provide up to date information on the business environment’s operational principles for the technology-, data- and design company’s partner network organization. Target was to examine what kind of rhizomic features network members where experiencing and what advantages and challenges were recognized in rhizomic operating model in network members point of view.
Qualitative approach was selected as the research method. Total six interviewees were selected from the technology-, data- and design company’s partner network. Research interviews were held as semi structured interviews. Research area was not limited to this particular partner network but the whole business environment of the interviewees in Finland. The video interview material was transcribed and later analysed using theory based content analysis.
According to the research results it was proven that network-like business environment had evidence on all six rhizome principles so it’s safe to say that the environment has rhizomic features. Connections, multiplicity and heterogeneity were experienced as the biggest benefits of the rhizomic operating model. The biggest challenge on the other hand was the difficulty to forecast.
