Tiivistelmä
Electronic commerce and marketplaces have made it possible for smaller companies to internationalize and participate in global trade. Entering new markets is possible with lower risk and investments made through marketplaces, which creates great opportunities for smaller companies with limited resources. How-ever, the internationalization process can be challenging due to the lack of knowledge of new markets.
This thesis was commissioned by Maatalousyhtymä Auvinen Arvo, Terttu ja
Hyökyvaara Elisa. The company is interested in taking its new product, a self-assembling birdhouse, to the US market and selling it on the largest marketplace, Amazon.com. The purpose of this thesis is to provide information on how to export to the United States and sell products on Amazon.com so that the company can offer its products to potentially millions of new customers.
Based on the analysis of the information obtained from systematic observations, interviews, document analysis and someone’s own personal experiences, the researcher was able to provide the customer company with understandable information about the export process to the United States. In addition, valuable practical tips for selling on Amazon.com could be provided by benchmarking the performance of an experienced Amazon seller.
The results suggest that to get the full potential of this internationalization process, the commissioning company should focus on exporting directly to Amazon and use Amazon's fulfillment service. The company should outsource its export process to a freight forwarder in order to focus on Amazon sales that require day-to-day management. The recommendations of the company interviewed in this thesis make it easier and more efficient for the commissioning company to start selling on Amazon.com and establish a profitable e-commerce business.
