When a parent falls ill, a child or young person becomes the bearer of a responsibility that does not yet belong to them. Such a life situation has a negative impact on his or her health and well-being. According to the 2019 School Health Survey, children and young people with caring responsibilities felt less helped by school and student health services than their peers.
The aim of the thesis was to find out what kind of support young caregivers receive in the school and student health care of Pori's basic care, with the purpose of increasing knowledge of the phenomenon through intervention and thus contributing to better identification of young caregivers.
The concept of young carers was unfamiliar to the participants, but most of them recognised it as a phenomenon. Health nurses had encountered the term mainly in health check-up situations where the situation of a child or young person had come to light. They often had more absences than others. The experience was that even major changes in young people's lives do not necessarily come to the attention of school and student health services. Health nurses had supported young carers by booking appointments to talk to them, and by referring them to other student health services. The nurses' assessment was that young carers would benefit from discussions with safe adults in low-threshold clinics, peer support, help from student support workers and concrete help at home.
A clear care pathway and systematic identification of young carers still needs a lot of refinement. Cooperation with adult health care and school and student health care should be intensified. More education and information on the subject is needed.
