In this bachelor’s thesis we will discuss dandelion children as well as associated terms pertaining to them. The purpose of our bachelor’s thesis was to examine which support measures have helped them bloom in everyday life, and in what way these support measures have helped them. By doing so we wanted to identify which support measures are the most substantial for dandelion children, and which support measure there needs to be more of.
We conducted this study by using a quantitative survey study. The targeted individuals of our study were dandelion children between the ages of 15-24. Our selection of individuals were young people that participated in support group activities for dandelion children in the Swedish speaking parts of Finland.
What we can see according to the results is that the social network has helped the most, but at the same time we can also see that schools, the third sector’s associations, support groups in social and healthcare, and other support measures have had a significant role in the young individuals’ lives. The result also shows that the professionals’ roles are crucial when it comes to the young individuals’ experiences in getting support for a difficult family situation. Creating trust is therefore a central part of the professionals’ work roles in support measures for dandelion children.
The social network amongst dandelion children is also shown to have a pivotal role and the importance of having trustful relationships outside of social support activities plays an important part in the individual's day to day life. By having trustworthy relations, whether it is in social support activities or outside of these, dandelion children have the chance to feel seen and heard in a commonly silenced and problematic family dynamic.
