Tiivistelmä
The purpose of the thesis was to describe self-leadership in Finnish basic education and the strategies used in Finnish basic education. The goal of the thesis is to widen the understanding of self-leadership and its strategies used in Finnish basic education and research how leadership in basic education could sup port self-leadership. The thesis was commissioned by the Sustainable Brain Health project from Tampere University of Applied Sciences.

The research method used in the thesis project was the quantitative research method, which presents research results numerally. Research data in this thesis project was primary data collected by the Sustainable Brain Health project in November 2020. Data used in the thesis project (n=72) consisted of background information, personal development statements, and self-leadership statements. Data analysis was performed in the SPSS analysis program.

Based on the Sustainable Brain Health project’s survey results, personal development was mainly often found possible at work, and working more rarely in cluded too many new things to learn. Results showed behaviour-focused self-leadership strategies being mostly used strategy. Constructive thought pattern strategy mostly used strategies reflecting personal beliefs and presumptions when facing difficult situations. The connection between personal development and self-leadership was discovered and defined. Based on the results, supervisors were more likely to use behaviour-focused self-leadership strategies and see opportunities for personal development at work.

Suggestions for leadership supporting self-leadership in Finnish basic education were created based on the results of the research. Teachers in Finnish basic education could be supported from a leadership point of view by offering self-leadership education, enabling such personal development opportunities, and using more self-leadership strategies in working. This could be found beneficial for teachers, but also the entire school environment.
