Tila antaa kaiken ilmaiseksi : miten lähestyä löydettyä tilaa esitysprosessissa

Abstract

Opinnäytetyöni tavoite on selvittää, miten taiteilija ja työryhmä voivat lähestyä löydettyä tilaa esitysprosessissa. Työni on avannut, millaisia mahdollisuuksia ja rajoitteita löydetyssä tilassa on, ja millaiset puitteet ne antavat niin taiteelliselle kuin tuotannolliselle työlle. Tämä on toteutettu yhdistämällä aihetta käsittelevää kirjallisuutta taiteellisen työn esimerkkeihin.

Päälähteenäni on toiminut Mike Pearsonin Site-Specific Performance -kirja (2010). Tämän lisäksi olen tutustunut muuhun teatteritilaa käsittelevään kirjallisuuteen, Taideyliopiston Teatterikorkeakoulun julkaisusarjojen verkko- oppimateriaaleihin sekä luotettaviksi kokemiini verkkosivustoihin.

Valitsemieni lähdemateriaalien avulla olen avannut löydetyn tilan erityispiirteitä, joita ovat tilan käyttötarkoitus, historia, fyysiset ulottuvuudet ja sijainti. Tilan erityispiirteitä ei voi sulkea pois, ja ne vaikuttavat väistämättä paikkasidonnaiseen esitykseen. Paikkasidonnaisessa teatterissa löydetty tila korostuu ja kaikki teatterin osa-alueet heijastuvat tilan kautta. Näistä syistä työryhmän on tärkeä tutustua löydettyyn tilaan tehdessään paikkasidonnaista teatteria. Työryhmän tapa suhtautua tilaan vaikuttaa paikkasidonnaiseen teokseen.

Löydetty tila ei ole suunniteltu esitystaiteen käyttöön, eikä siellä ole valmiita käytäntöjä, vaan työryhmän pitää luoda tilaan omat käytäntönsä. Löydetyissä tiloissa tehdyissä esitysprosesseissa tulee kiinnittää erityistä huomioita tilan vaikutuksiin niin taiteellisessa kuin tuotannollisessa työssä. Löydetty tila antaa esitykselle erityiset puitteet.

In site specific performances, found space affects all aspects of theatre and thus the entire performance. The purpose of my study has been to examine how artists and workgroups can approach found space in the performance process. I have researched what kinds of possibilities and limitations there are in found space and what kinds of frames a space sets both in terms of artistic and production work. This has been done by combining literature on the topic with examples of artistic work.

My main source has been Mike Pearson's book Site-Specific Performance (2010). As my other source materials, I have used additional literature on the theater space, online learning materials from the Uniarts Helsinki’s Theatre Academy’s publication series and other websites which I have considered reliable.

By choosing these source materials, I have aimed to discuss the special features of found space which are the purpose of use, history, dimensions, and location of the space. The special features of the space cannot be shut out and they inevitably affect site specific performances. In site specific theatre, the found space is emphasized and all parts of the theater are reflected through the space. For these reasons it is important for the working group to get to know the found space in site specific performance. The way the working group approaches the space affects the work.

Found space is not designed for the use of performing arts, and there are no ready-made practices, instead the working group has to create its own practices in the space. In performance processes made in found spaces, special attention should be paid to the effects of the space in both artistic and production work. The found space gives the performance a special setting.
