Tiivistelmä
Gardner Denver Oy is going to invest in the new Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) to produce compressor components. The purpose of this thesis was to study production challenges in FMS and find the technical solutions for these challenges. The existing FMS line's flexibility is insufficient for the current product population, the geometric accuracy of the machine tools is unavoidable, and the line suffers from numerous unexpected production interruptions. FMS concept and screw compressor manufacturing tolerances were studied on a general level and real-time machining monitoring and in-process measuring are the main topics of this thesis.

This paper analyses the manufacturing tolerance requirements of a screw compressor in terms of its functionality. The data were collected from current production to define requirements for new FMS line. Tool monitoring and on-machine probing were tested in the machine tool and their functionality was estimated.

Tool monitoring and adaptive feedrate show major improvement of machining process reliability and savings on perishable tooling cost. On-machine probing was suitable for diameter related measurements but location accuracy was out of tolerances. The study of the current FMS lines clearly showed the weaknesses of the current system and the new line concept could be defined for investment.

This thesis produced the technical solutions for a reliable machining process in an FMS-type environment and the guidelines of the production philosophy for the manufacture of compressor parts. Further investigation is needed for in-process measuring to achieve requested tolerances.
