Tiivistelmä
The aim of this thesis is to add information about prescription medication abuse, and how nurses can see the signs of addiction. There is plenty of stigma around people using substances, we hope that this research will bring more education on the subject and change healthcare professionals’ attitudes toward people suffering from addiction.
The goal is to find out how prescription opioid addiction occurs and what can be done to increase awareness, as well as prevention by nurses regarding this subject.
This study was done as a literature review. Data was reviewed through two online search engines: Janet and Google Scholar. The quality of the data was evaluated, analyzed and discussed by the researchers.
Findings of the research show different ways how an individual can act while suffering from addiction. It also shows the relationship between nurses’ attitudes and patients’ willingness to get better. Healthcare professionals need better education on addiction and how to destigmatize substance abusers.
The study from the sources resulted in the conclusion that nurses can recognize the addiction of opioid pre- scribed medication. It can be done by boosting the destigmatization of patients and education about addiction and prevention to achieve better care results.
