Environmental sustainability practices and sustainability communication in the Finnish textile industry : A case study of PaaPii Design Oy

The thesis explored sustainable practices within the Finnish textile industry. The research followed a case study approach where an SME called PaaPii Design Oy was studied as a case company. The research objectives identified for this study include analysing the practices of PaaPii Design Oy to develop its environmental sustainability, exploring the relationship of environmentally friendly techniques to the growth and development of its business, and analysing the management of communication and reporting practices of PaaPii Design Oy in Finland.
The theoretical framework covered the various dimensions of environmental sustainability circular economy, carbon footprint and ISO standards. It explicitly concentrated on ecologically sustainable practices in Finnish textiles, including communication and reporting in the Finnish textile industry.
The research was based on four semi-structured interviews and secondary data, which were analysed using content and thematic analysis. The results revealed that the case company has been adopting acceptable environmentally sustainable practices in its production but still confronting challenges due to a limited workforce and financial resources. The organisation values the environment and cares for the planet's future, as it has been following new practices, trends and materials to support sustainable development. However, the practices related to sustainability communication and reporting are still mainly on a personal level. Due to limited resources, a more strategic touch is needed to be added to the organisation.
Recommendations on enhancing the growth and development opportunities and developing effective sustainability communication are based on the interpretations of the interviews for PaaPii. The proposals have been introduced to the case company with positive feedback.
