World Health Organization has defined female genital mutilation((FGM) as the procedures that causes injuries to female genitalia with reasons that are non-medical and violation of women’s human right. This is a tradition that is commonly practiced in countries of African, Asia and Middle East. Due to increasing international migration, it has led to movement of a number of women and girls who have undergone FGM to countries where this practice is not carried out or not known. Therefore, posing a peculiar challenge to healthcare when women and girls with FGM seek care. Since nursing students are the future healthcare providers, this study therefore, aimed at exploring nursing student’s knowledge and attitude towards FGM.
A qualitative study method was chosen for this study. Where semi-structured interviews were used to collect data and 7 nursing students took part in this study. The data collected was then analyzed using content analysis to find the results. Campinha-Bacote’s model, the Process of Cultural Competence in the Delivery of Healthcare Services has been chosen as a guide.
In this study two themes were found, that is attitude and competence. From attitude, nursing students showed mixed attitude towards FGM while showing positive attitude towards women and girls with FGM by being sensitive, showing empathy and not being judgemental when caring for them. When it comes to competence, most of the nursing students also showed lack of knowledge about FGM practice as well as lack of skills when one encounter women and girls who have undergone FGM.
It is, therefore, necessary to provide more training and raise awareness in FGM among nursing student in preparation for their future working life.
