Tiivistelmä
During the past two decades, Finland has been a competitive nation well developed at a national level, and an international role model in matters of stability and well-being. The tasks and objectives were to study the significant factors that manifested a change in competitiveness during 2018 and 2019 for Finland, contrasting it with global trends.
A longitudinal case study was conducted analyzing secondary data from trustworthy sources such as the EU commission, Statistics Finland, Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, and other Ministries and national institutions. The World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Index was chosen as the theoretical framework to direct the course of action.
The results revealed slight changes in the pillars of the Global Competitiveness Index for Finland during 2018-2019 compared to the previous year’s trends, particularly in the areas of the labor market, business sophistication, and innovation. The in-depth investigation demonstrated changes in aspects of cluster development, market dominance, staff training, and R&D expenditure.
Conclusions were drawn based on resource allocation, market expansion, and macroeconomic factors. Recommendations for future research were made suggesting the extension of the analyzed period to cover the impacts caused by the Covid-19 crisis or the comparison of competitive trends between Nordic countries. Lack of primary data sources was identified as being part of the limitations.
