Tiivistelmä
Malnutrition is a common problem globally, however since aging increases vulnerability, elderly people are more susceptible to it following the loss of independence and cognitive ability. This study therefore aims to understand the causes and effects of malnutrition among the elderly population and to understand the nursing interventions for malnutrition, guided by the research question, ‘What is the role of nurses in the management and prevention of malnutrition? ‘
The study was done based on a systematic literature review method which involved the critical analysis of eight scientific articles selected from PubMed, CINAHL and Google Scholar databases.
The results showed that the crucial step in the management and prevention of malnutrition is its identification. This therefore means that nurses should be well acquainted with the nutritional screening tools to be able to identify the people at risk of malnutrition on time. that nurses play a vital role in the management and prevention of malnutrition however, the involvement of the elderly people through education and counseling is also important in the prevention of malnutrition.
It is recommended that more research be done on the knowledge of nurses on nutritional screening tools and more on their education to ensure they stay up to date with implemented nutritional interventions
