In recent years, increasing competition between companies has resulted in these companies striving to make business processes less complex to increase customer satisfaction and improve their competitive advantage. Incorporating enterprise resource planning systems that integrate the different functions of an organisation improves business processes. Financial accounting and management accounting are part of the business functions that are integrated in enterprise resource planning systems. The aim of this research was to examine how the adoption of enterprise resource planning system by an organisation affects its financial and management accounting processes.
The theoretical framework consists of an introduction of enterprise resource planning systems, SAP enterprise resource planning and its functional modules. It examines the importance of enterprise resource planning systems and reason why companies adopt them. Also, the study introduces financial accounting and management accounting and the SAP financial accounting and controlling module responsible for accounting processes. Analysis on the change brought by these advanced information systems to financial and management accounting processes is also covered.
A qualitative research method was adopted, and a questionnaire with open ended questions and a few closed ended questions was sent to Fujitsu Finland OY, a case study company whose customers have adopted SAP enterprise resource planning systems and conclusions were drawn based on the responses received.
