The aim of this study is to examine which the factors and circumstances are that may af-fect the discharge procedure in the outpatient setting. The quality of the patient education and the pedagogic approach are of great value for the patients’ satisfaction and opinion of hospital care. The study is projected by HUS/Peijas sjukhus. Antonovskys’ salutogenic model of the origin of health and sense of coherence works as the theoretical reference. The research question is: Which factors and circumstances may affect the discharge pro-cedure in the outpatient setting? To answer this question a quality literature study with an inductive content analysis is performed as method. The result of the literature study shows that it is important to see to the caretakers’ own needs, to start from the point of knowledge that she holds at the moment when the education starts. The quality and the amount of information are of great value. A well-performed patient education containing evidence-based information reduces the likelihood of readmission to hospital. Further the results shows that caretakers wish to have information about pain and how to handle it, daily activities, wound care, diet, postoperative complications, time for check-up control, when to seek care if problems arise. The time when giving information is important, it should be given both before and after the surgical treatment and should be given both orally and in writing. The role of relatives and family and the giving of information to them is also of great value, as the care after the surgery takes place at home. A good edu-cation reduces anxiety and stress and promotes the recovery.
