Tiivistelmä
Migration is increasing rapidly worldwide, causing societies to become ever more multicultural. Therefore, nations are challenged to integrate immigrants into all aspects of society, and by doing so, establishing cohesion amongst residents. Despite substantial research conducted on integration, immigrants’ perspectives remain comparatively underrepresented.
The aim of this research is to explore immigrants’ perspectives on the role of language competence during integration. The results will add to existing knowledge and will be applied in developing more efficient strategies to ease language learning, and through that integration.
This research is conducted using qualitative research methods. Participants are immigrants from various migrant groups, living in Finland for at least 4 years. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis method. Meanwhile the theoretical framework consists of literature from books, scientific articles, and other relevant sources.
The research results suggest that language competence is a gateway to political and social participation, employment opportunities better health and survival in everyday living; all of which are needed to integrate into the society. The results also show that although some challenges are experienced while learning Finnish, there are also factors that keep immigrants motivated during this process. Some suggestions are made to improve learning outcomes, but also further research is needed to explore this area.
