Paperikenkämallisto: materiaaleja kierrättäen ja uusiokäyttäen

Abstract

Tässä toiminnallisessa opinnäytetyössä selvitettiin paperin mahdollisuutta materiaalina kengän valmistukseen käsityönä. Lähtökohtana työlle toimi Suomessa 1940-luvulla vallinnut pula-aika ja korvikemateriaalina paperinarusta valmistetut jalkineet. Opinnäytettä ohjasi vahvasti kestävän kehityksen periaate, joka ilmenee työstä mm. materiaalien kierrättämisen ja uusiokäytön tavoin. Työssä käsiteltiin myös nykyajan maisemaa paperikengistä, aiheeseen liittyviä ympäristöhaittoja sekä jalkinealan vallitsevia trendejä.

Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli ratkaista materiaalitestausten avulla paperin toimivuus kengän päälliseen ja selvittää paperin mahdollisuutta myös pohjien raaka-aineena suoritettujen paperimassakokeilujen kautta. Kokeilut suoritettiin tee-se-itse- tyyppisesti, ja niistä saatujen tulosten, pula-ajan jalkineiden havainnoimisen, trendiennusteiden ja kohderyhmän pohjalta suunniteltiin mallisto. Suunnittelun pohjalta luotiin esityskuvina kolmen jalkineparin mallisto, jonka yhdestä jalkinemallista valmistettiin käsityönä prototyyppipari.

Opinnäytetyön lopputuloksena syntyi nykyaikainen paperikenkämallisto ja prototyyppi, jotka toimivat konseptinomaisena näkemyksenä siitä, mitä paperin käyttö jalkineissa voisi olla. Opinnäytetyön ulkopuolelle rajattiin kengän pohjien, sekä koko paperisen jalkineen toimivuuden selvittäminen käytössä. Työssä tehtyjen kokeilujen tulokset kuitenkin osoittavat, että paperilla voi jatkokehittelyllä olla potentiaalia jalkinemateriaalina tulevaisuudessa. Opinnäytetyö antaa lukijalle lisäksi inspiraatiota siitä, miten päivittäisiä jätemateriaaleja voi hyödyntää tuotteiksi.

The purpose of this thesis was to solve the possibility of paper as a material for making shoes by hand. The starting point for the project was the austerity-era Finland in the 1940s, and the footwear made from substitute materials like paper string. The thesis was strongly guided by the principle of sustainable development, which can be seen in the work as recycling and reuse of materials. The work also dealt with the contemporary landscape of papershoes today, environmental harms related to the topic, and prevailing trends in the footwear industry.

The aim of the thesis was to solve the functionality of paper as a shoe upper with the help of material testing and to find out the possibility of paper as a raw material for the soles through paper pulp experiments. All the experiments and material testings were carried out in a do-it-yourself type of way and based on the results, the observation of the austery era footwear in Finland, trend forecasts and the target group, a collection was designed. The collection consisted of three pairs of shoes as presentation images, and a handmade prototype from one of the designed collection pieces.

The outcome of the thesis resulted a modern papershoe collection and a prototype made by hand which serve as a conceptual vision of what the use of paper in footwear could be. The soles of the shoes and the functionality of the whole papershoes in use were delineated outside of the thesis. However, the results of the experiments show that paper could have potential as a footwear material in the future with further development. The thesis also gives the reader inspiration on how everyday waste materials found from home can be utilized into products.
