The research part of my thesis examines the philosophical dimensions of space and place and their connection to contemporary art. It also explores the political possibilities of the representation and experience of art.
First, I will provide a background to the emergence of my own experience of space and the hobbies that shaped and affected it. I will also consider the political and philosophical dimensions of those hobbies from a feminist perspective.
In the third chapter I ask questions about the material choices made by artists, firstly myself, and the reasons for these choices. I draw on the philosopher Alva Noë's ideas on artistic seeing and Eetu Viren's book Vallankumouksen asennot. I also open up to the reader the relationship of photographic documentation to my own artistic process.
In the fourth chapter, I explore the nature of site-specific works through philosopher Michel Foucault's concept of heterotopia. This chapter also presents examples of site-specific works in which I have been involved. At the end of the chapter, the nature of site-specific work is discussed in relation to established spaces for the presentation of art, such as galleries.
In the fifth chapter I ask questions about the presentation of art and the bourgeoise tendencies of art. The book Glitch collector by visual artist Sauli Sirviö and Eetu Viren's Vallankumouksen asennot serve as sources for the reflections.
