This thesis is a research based academic document with a general layout including the introduction, where the topic is described in detail, the main framework created by the author from collecting all supporting theories, methodology and finally the findings and conclusions.
Moving from the fun, leisure tourism, towards the dark side of it, this thesis aims to find how tourists’ experiences are affected by the destinations of war, death, and tragedy. Considering the fact that topics such as tourism, dark tourism and experiences are not novelty to the public, this research addresses a particular subject, that being transformative tourism. Combining the aforementioned categories, the study narrows down the investigation to clarifying the elements that lead visitors to having meaningful experiences.
Having transformative experiences as a main objective, this research discussion goes around the influence of emotions, motivations, and engagement levels on how tourists perceive their visits. With the aid of several theories, the main framework is laid out clearly in order to support the methods of data collection. Numerous ideas, that help solve the research questions, have come up during the interviews conducted as the main research method.
The case study, Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, limits the research to this one destination only, thus the restraint in generalizing the answers discovered during the interviews. Nevertheless, the study is a starting point in discovering the topic and the future of the transformative tourism industry.
