This research focuses on comparing the business leadership cultures of Japan and France, exploring the influence of leadership concepts on company performance and organizational structure. Inspired by Goleman's theory of six leadership styles, the study aims to determine the leadership styles of both countries, identify their similarities and differences, and analyze their relevance. The research adopts a realistic philosophy and employs an exploratory and inductive approach. It utilizes archival research based on secondary sources such as relevant publications. The chosen methodology is mono-method, and the time horizon is a longitudinal study.
The research sheds light on the leadership styles within French and Japanese business cultures. The commanding style prevails in French leadership culture, while the Japanese’s culture embraces democratic and visionary styles. Notably, France places a strong emphasis on hierarchy and individual authority, whereas Japan prioritizes collaboration and consensus-based decision-making. Both cultures value relationships, particularly in small to medium-sized businesses. In conclusion, the distinct leadership cultures of France and Japan significantly impact how leaders engage with their teams.
