Kansainvälisten näyttelypuutarhojen merkitys maisemasuunnittelijan uralla ja verkostoitumisessa

Abstract

Tämä opinnäytetyö on toteutettu portfoliona. Sen tavoitteena on esitellä alamme ammattilaisille ja opiskelijoille, kuinka näyttelypuutarhakilpailuilla voi osoittaa monipuolista ammattitaitoa. Opinnäytetyö pyrkii vastaamaan kysymykseen, millä tavoin näyttelypuutarhat voivat vaikuttaa maisemasuunnittelijan työhön ja uraan. Lisäksi pohdittavana oli, voisiko niihin osallistuminen edesauttaa uraa kansainvälisillä markkinoilla ja voiko kilpailuun osallistuminen tuoda eteen haasteita, mihin on vaikea vaikuttaa ja sopeutua ulkomaalaisena suunnittelijana. Tässä opinnäytetyössä kerrotaan tapoja ja keinoja, miten ammattialalla voi viedä haluamaansa sanomaa eteenpäin. Historiakertomus Chelsean puutarhanäyttelyn syntymisestä kertoo, mistä idea näyttelypuutarhoihin sai aikanaan alkunsa ja mitkä asiat vaikuttavat teemaideoihin. Tämän kaltainen suunnittelu- ja rakennustyö on yksi tapa viestiä asioista, minkä koemme tärkeäksi niin globaalisti kuin pienemmässäkin mittakaavassa. Olen suunnitellut ja rakentanut tähän mennessä viisi näyttelypuutarhaa ja jokaisessa niistä on ollut takana tarina, jonka halusin viestittää katsojille. Niin kilpailuvuosien aikana kuin niiden jälkeenkin, olen saanut kokea, kuinka paljon hyötyä kansainvälisestä yhteistyöstä on alallamme. Opinnäytetyössä tutkittiin, miten nykypäivän trendit ja megatrendit vaikuttavat näyttelypuutarhakilpailujen teemoihin, tarinoihin ja materiaalivalintoihin. Esittelen kaikki kilpailupuutarhani hakemisvaiheesta palkintojenjakoihin. Kerron suunnittelun ja rakentamisen haasteista ja itse etenemistavasta. Jokaisen työn tuloksena oli valmis teos, joka kilpaili kansainvälisellä tasolla, oman ammattialamme lahjakkaimpien suunnittelijoiden joukossa. Työn liitteenä on englanninkielinen portfolio näyttelypuutarhoistani. Töiden johtopäätöksenä voin sanoa, että näyttelypuutarha on hyvä vaikutustapa ja sen avulla voimme tuoda esille asioita, jotka koemme itse tärkeiksi. Samalla se on erinomainen mahdollisuus luoda jotain todella poikkeuksellista, verrattuna omaan perustyöhön alallamme.

This thesis was carried out as a portfolio work. The goal is to reflect to on the professionals and the students of landscape design: how versatile professionalism of landscape designers can be projected with the help garden exhibition competitions. This thesis aims to answer the question “in which ways exhibition gardens can influence the work and career of a landscape designer?”. In addition, the thesis examines whether participating in garden exhibition competitions could help in developing an international career, and whether participating in a competition could bring challenges that the participant does not have influence upon or may experience difficulties in adapting into, in particular as a foreign designer. In this thesis, I show the ways and means by which you can take your desired message forward, and I also tell the ways and means by which the intended message can be conveyed are discussed. In addition, the history related to the origins of exhibition gardens and the factors influencing the themes are exlored. Design and construction work may communicate feelings of importance both globally and locally. The author of this thesis has designed and built five exhibition gardens so far, and each of them have a story behind them, which is communicated to the viewer. International cooperation is beneficial in the field of landscape design and the author has been able to experience it in many ways during the years of competing. This thesis examines how today's trends and megatrends that affect the themes, stories and material choices of show garden competitions. The author’s gardens are presented from the application stage to the prize giving. The discussion does not only touch upon the challenges of planning, but also about construction and the way I proceeding order. The result of each design and construction work is a finished piece of garden art that competed at an international level, among the most talented designers in the field of landscape design. The portfolio written in English is attached to this thesis. As a conclusion of the work, I can say that it can be stated that in the design work of the exhibition gardens various features can be influenced and they can also project the personalities of their designers. At the same time, it is an excellent opportunity to create something truly exceptional, compared to the daily work of landscape designers.
