This is a product-based bachelor´s thesis which project objective was to review the current onboarding processes and materials what the commissioning company is using. The aim of the thesis was to create onboarding model for the internal use.
This project was divided into five different project tasks. The first task was to design the theoretical framework of the onboarding model, the second task was to establish the current onboarding materials and processes, the third task was to draft the onboarding model and the fourth task was to present and finalizing the model. Evaluation of the project was the fifth project task.
At first the author conducted research to find out how the current onboarding processes are handled in the company and which materials were supporting onboarding at this point. The qualitative and quantitative research methods was used when conducting the research. Eight managers were interviewed, and new employees was invited to answer the survey.
The results from the research were analysed around onboarding current content and materials. The author analysed the results and got information which part the current onboarding processes includes and which parts are not so visible for the new employees. The analysis from the research was that follow-up and feedback section and onboarding plan will be added in the model because these parts were not so visible for the new employees. Overall, the content of the onboarding should be visualized and standardize via model creation. The research results gave a good foundation to continue working and start drafting the onboarding model.
The main idea behind the model creation was how to improve the onboarding process to become more consistent and what phases should be included into the model. Information from the research and theories gave an idea which components to draft into the model and the following components were selected: tasks to do before new employee is entering in the employment place (Phase 1), Welcome tasks (Phase 2), guidance of work and organizational familiarization (Phase 3) and onboarding follow-up and feedback (Phase 4).
The onboarding draft was presented to the commissioning company and adjusted accordingly the feedback. The final model included onboarding program with four phases and onboarding supportive materials was included the model as well. The outcome was a visual model in a size of A4 where manager or new employee can see how the onboarding is run in this organization.
