Tiivistelmä
Metal music has gone through some major changes during its lifetime, and it keeps evolving, thanks to the growth of social media. Metal music has always been a gateway for storytellers, and it remains a powerful method to have a voice, to tell a story.
The objective of this thesis was to study concept albums and how storytelling plays a major role in metal music from the songwriter’s perspective. The goal was to reflect on the history of metal music, development, and how concept albums became such an important artform in different sub genres of metal. Some concept albums were researched, listened, and used to demonstrate different methods in storytelling, comparing them to the media part of this thesis.
In addition to the research presented in this thesis a project in form of a concept album was made during the process, and three of its songs serve as the media part of this thesis, two of which are presented with a music video. The songs and videos demonstrate how different storytelling elements can be created with musical, visual, and lyrical themes.
