Communication difficulties in intellectual disability are a common issue and one of the most vital factors affecting quality care access. People with intellectual disabilities have poorer health conditions that are lifelong but most of them can be avoided. However, their premature death rate suggests drawing attention to their healthcare needs. Nurses can play an important role to apply interaction interventions and promote the inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities.
This thesis is project-based, having a product. The aim of the thesis is for students to have knowledge of how to use the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) to develop interaction with children with intellectual disabilities. The purpose of this thesis was to create educational material for nursing students of SeAMK on how to develop communication with children with intellectual disabilities using the PECS.
The product is in the form of a PowerPoint, which is also attached to the appendix of this thesis. The product contains slides on the theoretical background of the topic and the implementation of the PECS method on children having intellectual disabilities. Feedback was sent to nursing students of SeAMK through email. A total of 9 respondents participated in this study. Overall, the content has also been given a good rating, which suggests that the product is useful, and implementation has been successful, which meets the purpose and aim of this project.
The project was conducted through stages of initiating, planning, executing, and closing. The agile project management method was applied, which helped to adapt improvements on any part of the project based on received feedback from the supervising teacher during any stage of the project.
The information in this thesis is sourced from reliable pieces of literature that have been cited as per SeAMK’s referencing style.
