Tiivistelmä
To preserve life during the covid-19 pandemic, national-level lockdowns were instituted bringing the entire society to a standstill. But to facilitate continuous functioning of the economic and educational sectors, technological aids were used which permitted ‘work from home’ and provision of education via ‘online education’. Although online education has facilitated continuation of education regardless its effects are not entirely positive, especially for nursing students. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of online studies due to the covid-19 pandemic on nursing students.

Two electronic databases namely CINAHL and PubMed were searched for relevant studies. Of the total 269 studies identified by the applied search strategy, 17 studies that met the inclusion criteria were selected. Selected studies were subjected to content analysis and their quality was appraised. After data extraction, content was organized and assessed by formulating main- and sub-themes.

Five main themes that emerged from content analysis are (1) health and wellbeing, (2) social life and interpersonal relationships, (3) professional competence, (4) deficiencies in the educational systems and infrastructure, and (5) general advantages of online studies. Online education led to tiredness and exhaustion and discontinued social lives. Lack of contact education prevented students from interacting with their peers and teachers and caused conflicts in the family lives. Lack of patient contact made students fear for their future job prospects and not developing sufficient professional skills. Technological issues and general deficiencies in the infrastructures hindered students from taking advantage of potential benefits of online education.

This review highlights the effects of online education in the times of covid-19 pandemic on nursing students. In conclusion, online education adversely impacted nursing students including their health and wellbeing, social lives, and professional prospects.
