Network Configurator Tool for Wärtsilä

Abstract

This thesis shows the development of a network configurator tool that will be used by engineers from Wärtsilä when supplying solutions and equipment that are connected to the network. Due to cyber security requirements and possible threats, the network is built based on the IEC 62443 standard, this standard utilizes segments and zones. These segments and zones are built by layering three routers in a quite far standardized network concept. To reduce mistakes and to streamline the configurations in the routers this network configuration tool is being developed to work with the three firewalls between these zones.

The configurator can change the configuration files for the routers depending on what is selected and added to the configurator. When the configurator is run there is also a PDF document saved that contains a list of all the active equipment with their respective IP addresses and ports. There will also be a PDF with the layout of the configuration saved. These lists will be generated as an easy way to get a quick overview of what has been configured in the routers. The configurator was developed in Excel using VBA coding and standard Excel features and the development resulted in a functional configurator. All three firewalls are configurable, all equipment can be disabled or activated and depending on that be added to the router configs and IP addresses can be changed directly in the configurator. The configurator is user-friendly, and a user manual was also written to go along with the configurator for ease of use.

Detta examensarbete visar utvecklingen av ett nätverkskonfiguratorverktyg som kommer att användas av Wärtsilä när de levererar lösningar och utrustning som är anslutna till nätverket. På grund av cybersäkerhetskrav och möjliga hot är nätverket baserat på IEC 62443-standarden. Denna standard använder sig av segment och zoner. Dessa segment och zoner är byggda genom att skikta tre routrar i ett ganska så långt standardiserat nätverkskoncept. För att minska på misstag och för att göra konfigurationen effektivare utvecklas detta verktyg för att fungera med brandväggarna mellan de tre zonerna.

Konfiguratorn kan ändra konfigurationsfilerna för routrarna beroende på vad som väljs och läggs till i konfiguratorn. När konfiguratorn körs så skapas och sparas även ett PDF-dokument som innehåller en lista över aktiv utrustning med respektive IP-adresser och portar. Det sparas även ett annat PDF-dokument med layout över konfigurationen. Dessa PDF-dokument kommer att genereras som ett enkelt sätt att få en snabb överblick över vad som har konfigurerats i routrarna. Konfiguratorn utvecklades i Excel med hjälp av VBA-kodning och standard Excel-funktioner. Utvecklingen resulterade i en funktionell konfigurator. All tre brandväggar är konfigurerbara, all utrustning kan inaktiveras eller aktiveras och beroende på det läggas till i konfigurationsfilerna och IP-adresserna kan ändras direkt i konfiguratorn. Konfiguratorn är användarvänlig och en användarmanual skrevs även för att ge användaren hjälp vid konfigurering.
