As technology is advancing in the maritime sector, it is critical for navigators to find ways to learn and keep up pace with this advancement. Training regimes must be implemented to adjust to this change. Simulator runs play a key role in independent studies for maritime students. In the following research I have come across the use of a portable home simulator to drive the potentials for independent studies and for students to develop their skills remotely, independently at their own ease.
The aim of the research reported is to access the benefits of a portable home simulators and how it may benefit seafarers who are studying maritime management.
As the research initiative is to find out the benefits of portable simulators to maritime students, the participants of this research are maritime students. All participants in this study have previous experience with the bridge simulators and were familiar with the use of the navigational instruments. The data for the study was planned to be collected on an experiment day on the campus, when the students use both bridge simulator and a portable simulator.
The ships used are of similar category, displacement, length and draft as to the bridge room bridge simulators. The area used for the exercises is the approaches to Rotterdam. After the experience on the portable simulator, the participants had a chance to talk freely about their experiences and share their opinion on the performance of the software, which is then, evaluated and answered in the conclusion.
