Alcohol is a taboo subject and can be sensitive for many people. How should it be addressed during pregnancy and how should midwives and other health professionals working with pregnant women deal with this? The study aims to identify how midwives/healthcare professionals can support pregnant women in achieving an alcohol-free pregnancy. The research question is: "How can the midwife/healthcare professional support the woman to stop or reduce her alcohol intake?". In this thesis, Katie Eriksson's caritative care theory serves as a theoretical reference framework. The thesis is a literature review with a general literature study as a method. The analysis method is content analysis. For this thesis, 11 scientific articles have been selected from the databases PUBMED and EBSCO. The results highlight what the midwife can do to reduce the risk of an alcohol-exposed pregnancy and what should be considered in caring for pregnant women who consume alcohol during their pregnancy. The results are presented under 6 different headings where the following are addressed: correcting contradictions and providing the right information, screenings, an open and non-judgmental care relationship, (daring) to talk about alcohol use, the midwife's knowledge of the subject, and the inclusion of the partner. The work is an ethics project initiated (2017) by HUS "We Care".
