Tiivistelmä
The main objective of this thesis was to research the factors that influence the pre-export activities of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) linked to their internationalization. Investigating these factors holds immense significance as it equips Finnish SMEs with the necessary awareness to enhance their preparedness for export endeavors. The thesis aimed to consolidate the researched pre-export factors into a comprehensive guide and illustration, providing a quick and accessible resource for Finnish SMEs. By synthesizing the extensive research findings, the guide offers a concise overview of the key factors that SMEs should consider before venturing into export activities. The accompanying illustration visually represents these factors, facilitating easy comprehension and enabling SMEs to grasp essential information efficiently. The findings bear great importance for Finnish SMEs but also for business development organizations dedicated to supporting their success. The study was commissioned by Forssan Yrityskehitys (FYK) with the objective of providing insights and guidance for SMEs in the Forssa region and FYK. An integral part of presenting a comprehensive picture of the pre-export landscape for the commissioning company involved conducting surveys among regional exporters and non-exporters, as well as an interview with FYK representative. These research methods provided valuable insights into the experiences, perspectives, and challenges faced by both exporting and non-exporting businesses in the region, and the interview offered a deeper understanding of the support services available to SMEs and their effectiveness in facilitating pre-export activities. By incorporating these perspectives, the thesis achieved a holistic view of the pre-export environment, enhancing the practicality and relevance of the research outcomes for the commissioning company. It emphasized the need for a comprehensive understanding of the factors that contribute to successful export activities.
