Background: Diabetic foot ulcers pose a significant challenge for individuals with diabetes, often leading to severe complications and reduced quality of life. Evidence has shown the global significance of diabetes and its associated complications, emphasizing the rising mortality, hospitalization, and economic burden. Diabetic foot ulcers are particularly concerning due to their contribution to lower limb amputations.
Aim and Purpose: To identify nursing interventions in the prevention of diabetic foot ulcers. the purpose was to present current best evidence-based nursing interventions that nurses can adopt towards diabetic foot ulcer prevention.
Methods: Literature review was adopted in this study. The authors searched data from three databases (Med-line, CINAHL and PubMed) and 8 articles that meets with the study inclusion criteria were selected for analysis. These articles were further analysed using inductive content analysis.
Results: The findings of this analysis were group into categories namely: self-care which represented diabetic patients’ self-care and the participation of the family in the care of patients. Professional care was presented as integrated. Lastly was enlightenment and involved applying patient education on diabetic foot ulcer and more so, the training for nurses towards the care of the risk patients for diabetic ulcer.
Conclusion: The review under-scores the importance of patient education, self-care practices, and comprehensive approaches in preventing and managing diabetic foot ulcers. The findings emphasize the need for continuous nursing education for nurses and support to enhance efficacy in reducing foot injuries and amputations among diabetic patients.
