This thesis explores the opportunities and challenges of non-Finnish speaking elderly in Finland when they approach digital cultural services. This thesis is going to add a new perspective to HomeOpera project conducted by Haaga-Helia’s Service Experience Laboratory LAB8. HomeOpera project is aiming to develop a concept for a social XR-service that improves elderly people’s chances for a better and stimulating life at home regardless their ageing and difficulties of doing exercises.
Digital cultural services provide people with variety of cultural activities that can be done remotely and time flexibly. Hence, people who are not often interested in culture will get more encourage to give it a try. On the other hand, people who are already keen on culture will be more enhanced to explore and fuel their passion with newer or deeper experiences.
These outcomes of the research are necessary for a society in general, as traditional cultural activities seem not to totally meet the demands of the cultural consumers nowadays, in the technology era. Besides that, the world has witnessed and gone through the Corona pandemic not so long ago. There are still many restrictions existing somewhere on this earth regarding Corona. Therefore, developing digital cultural services is to catch up with the technology age and create more experiences for the culture consumption.
The qualitative research is chosen as the main research method to answer the research questions based on the answers collected from semi-structured interview and the data analysis from them .
