Nepal as a Destination for Foreign Female Travelers

The aim of this study was to investigate Nepal’s suitability as a destination for female solo travelers. The research questions were how safe the respondents find Nepal as a solo travel destination, have the respondents ever travelled alone anywhere and, what kind of special features solo traveling women have. The reason the author chose this topic is that she has travelled in Nepal due to her family matters. She is also familiar with the Nepalese people and the culture. The author was willing to search more information regarding solo traveling women, attitudes towards them and how Nepal welcomes the women who are traveling on their own.
Theoretical framework emphasizes the solo traveling women’s behavior, safety when traveling alone and the current travel trends. The objective was to understand better these phenomena.
The method for quantitative research was questionnaire that was created on Webropol. The survey link was active between 18th September and 30th October, and it gathered 18 responses. Survey was aimed only for women due to the thesis subject. The survey link was shared in three specific Facebook groups and, for the authors friends and relatives. The number respondents were lower than was expected.
The results revealed that Nepal is found somewhat safe for female solo travelers. The reputation of Nepal is better than, for example, India that has issues regarding women’s safety. Also, the first images regarding Nepal, that comes to respondents’ minds, were notably positive. These images were related to Nepalese food culture, nature, and traditions. However, only a less than a half of the respondents was willing to travel Nepal alone if they had a chance.
