This thesis explores the connection between Artificial Intelligence and management. The objective of this thesis was to increase understanding of the transforming nature of managerial positions when AI is potentially implemented to automate and augment manager’s tasks in an organisation.
The theoretical framework of this thesis is based on the roles, tasks and skills which are needed in an organisation to be a manager. In addition, current literature linking AI and management was being explored to understand the current state of how AI is thought to change the management practices in an organisation.
The thesis project started in February 2023 and was completed in November 2023. The research is based on qualitative case study method. Empirical data for this research was collected primarily by conducting semi-structured interviews with five participants. Analysis of the data was based on theory-driven method by utilising the theoretical framework to code and analyse the transcribed interview data. The results were evaluated by a questionnaire sent to the interview participants to confirm the findings of the results.
The results of this research indicate that a managerial role which is predominantly focused on routine tasks is being transformed into a role which demands more focus on strategic thinking, creativity, and the ability to harness the full potential of AI as a strategic companion. Additionally, more focus should be placed into learning human skills as managers would hope to have more time to interact with their subordinates and other work colleagues when AI would automate or augment their current tasks.
