A Comprehensive Exploration of an Austrian Ice hockey Talent Development Environment through the lens of the Talent Development Environment Questionnaire aire

Abstract

The present study delves into the perceptions of junior elite players concerning their talent development environment. Employing the Talent Development Environment Questionnaire (TDEQ), a quantitative tool within an Austrian ice hockey club. The TDEQ, consisting of 7 factors and 59 items, serve as a comprehensive instrument to assess the multifaceted elements influencing talent development. This study aims to comprehensively, investigate and understanding the perceptions of junior elite players regarding their talent development environment. Further the TDEQ will sheds light on what the effect of talent development environment has on the pathway of developing athletes. A total of 77 athletes between 14 and 21 years old participated in the study by providing responses to the TDEQ. The research aims also to systematically analyze the responses, offering insights into the distinctive features which are important in talent development. Primary findings reveal a prominent characteristic within the Austrian talent development environment-a robust support network. Athletes consistently report that the staff members surrounding them are readily available for guidance and support. This initial discovery suggests a positive and influential factor contributing to the holistic growth of athletes within the investigated TDE. However, a nuanced examination indicates that factors such as understanding the athletes, quality preparation, a challenging and supportive environment, long-term development, and communication were not perceived as strongly. This discrepancy underscores the need for a detailed exploration of these specific factors to identify areas for improvement. The stud shifts its focus to a detailed examination of these specific factors, aiming to discern the nuances contributing to their perceived strengths and weaknesses. By addressing these aspects, the research seeks to offer tailored recommendations to strength the areas which the players perceived as weak. These insights will contribute to a more holistic understanding of the Austrian talent development environment, paving the way for targeted interventions that address the identified areas of improvement. The study extends beyond the specific context of Austria and contributing insights to discourse on effective talent development strategies.
