Tiivistelmä
A nationwide harbour strike was announced by the Finnish Transport Workers’ Union on February 15th, 2023. This strike meant a halt in the exportation of goods, especially regarding containers. For companies relying on exports as their main source of economic activity, this change would have great consequences especially in the lead times of shipments presumed to be shipped during the strike.
This thesis researched how the harbour strike influenced the logistics operations of Brown-Forman Finland. Since the company relies heavily on exports, a restraint on the shipping quantity over the two-week period would have great consequences. When looked at from a wider a perspective, this small change created a bullwhip effect that was felt in other processes for a long period of time. The aim of the research conducted was then to analyse the effects of the harbour strike through comparisons of data during times with no external influences.
To determine the changes regarding the logistics process at Brown-Forman Finland. Key performance indicators regarding different aspects were used to create comparisons with the other months. This secondary data illustrated in the research was gathered by the business itself. The primary data, on the other hand, was gathered by the researcher, during their time in the outbound logistics function of the company, as a logistics specialist.
While the findings showed some very expected negative impacts on the total volume bottled from the production side of business. On the other hand, some unexpected results relating to the number of distributions would show how certain performance indicators do not necessarily show the full impact. Assumptions created regarding these developments would then be made using the information gathered during the interview.
