Tiivistelmä
Safety comes first, this is one of the most highlighted key aspects in the construction field. Workers are supposed to comply with safety measures, for example, wearing safety helmets, safety shoes, and safety vests, and using safety hooks when working at height. Statistics have proven that the construction sector has one of the highest levels of fatal and non-fatal incidents, most of these incidents are due to not using personal protection equipment.
Through the years of working in the construction field, the author has developed the idea of having an IoT-based monitoring system for workers' compliance with safety standards. IoT technologies like Bluetooth low energy (BLE), beacons, BLE positioning concepts, and Bluetooth mesh provide the proper theoretical background for the research. The research’s main objective was to find the IoT technologies that can be used to make the monitoring system and discover the features needed in the system to allow proposing it.
To enrich the author’s main idea and expand the view on the major use cases that IoT can resolve, a survey was conducted, respondents were selected to ensure having experience in construction site work, the survey was open for two weeks, followed by interviews that were carried out with some of the respondents, the feedback was analyzed, the result was a list of features that the system should possess, with good insights about the ethical aspects, method of deploying the system in addition to the recommended sustainability and applicability features. Based on the author’s main idea, survey, and interviews, the author explores the available IoT technologies that can be used to make the intended monitoring system.
The author proposes a monitoring system where workers' safety equipment is provided with BLE chipsets, workers are wearing smartwatches that can sense if the worker is using the needed safety equipment, and in case of non-compliance, an alert message will be sent to a central application which in turn sends the alert to supervisors for further action. The author provides some examples of exact products that can be used, explains the capabilities that the system should possess, and provides guidelines about change management, ethical considerations, and sustainability of the system.
The research was conducted in Finland and lasted for nine weeks starting from September 2023, the author has reached the desired conclusions and found the answer to the main objective, which is identifying the needed IoT technologies that can be used to create the monitoring system and has reflected the survey and interviews results on the features of the system.
