The goal of this thesis was to focus on introducing the basics of the material flow management with its goals, advantages and challenges. Additional topics were different methodologies and tools, Lean thinking, the FIFO principle, ABC-analysis and ERP software, and how they support the aim of material flow optimization. This thesis was written based on research done about similar publications including articles, books and service provider webpages.
Material flow management is a potential source of costs savings for a company. An optimized material flow system reduces costs through less work, time, and resources going to the movement of the goods themselves, and through betterment of the inventory turnover. There are multiple strategies, methodologies and tools that a manager can utilize to further support the goal of material flow optimization.
