Tiivistelmä
Burnout among nurses is a widespread phenomenon. The wellness of caregivers determines their ability to give patient centred care. Understanding the causes and management of burnout is essential in improving the working life of nurses . This study was aimed at reviewing available evidence systematically on the factors responsible for burnout in intensive care unit (ICU) nurses and to identify the preventive and management strategies in mitigating the menace of burnout.

The study was carried out through a qualitative systematic review of literature selected from four electronic databases with year of publication between 2014 and 2023. The Nurse Work life model and the Conservation of Resources theories were chosen as the theoretical framework of the research. Eight (8) papers that were analyzed through thematic content analysis revealed that multidisciplinary issues, working conditions and work stressors, psychological drains and organizational issues are the major contributing factors to burnout.

Burnout can be effectively managed and or prevented through the implementation of self-care, multidisciplinary collaboration, effective leadership and management interventions. The study concludes that the factors contributing to burnout in Intensive care unit nurses originate from the members of the care team and those involved in the management and formulation of policies. Therefore, it is important that policy makers, leaders of ICU and managers design and implement suitable interventions to eliminate the problem of burnout to improve the working life of nurses
