This thesis examines the use of virtual technology and its potential in the daytime activities of people with autism spectrum disorders. Virtual reality glasses, or VR glasses, had been acquired for the Katajamäki Activity Centre at the Savas Foundation. VR glasses were a new technical tool in the use of the Savas Foundation. To implement them, actions were needed to which this thesis sought to respond. The aim of this thesis was to find out how VR glasses can be used as a rehabilitative tool in the daytime activities of autism spectrum customers and to use VR glasses in daytime activities. The aim was to create easy-to-use instructions for VR glasses for the instructors, which would be used to inspire and make it as easy as possible to introduce VR glasses to customer work.
This was a development work aimed at developing autism rehabilitation as the content of daytime activities with the help of virtual technology. The development work was carried out together with the help of customers, a purpose-built working group, and instructors. The methods used in this thesis were a form interview directed at customers, a Webropol survey aimed at instructors and experiential information produced by practical experiments. The development work approach in this thesis was a model for continuous development. The work used the PDSA model, the Deming Circle, which is a model for continuous development. The cyclic model was suitable for this development work because the use of VR glasses continues to be developed further.
As a result of the development work, the instructions for the use of VR glasses will remain available to the instructors of the Savas Foundation as a working tool. In addition to basic use, the instruction describes what kind of applications can be used with glasses and what features of the autism spectrum can be rehabilitated using virtual technology. It is up to the instructors themselves to direct and develop the use of the glasses further. The customers benefit indirectly from the development work. The accumulated user experience and the information obtained from it through a survey is one output generated from the thesis. This information can be utilized in the future by allocating support and resources to development work as needed. The final concrete output, the easy-to-use instructions, can be distributed to the employees of the Foundation's various locations to assist with their rehabilitation activities.
