The contemporary hotel industry has undergone significant transformations from its inception centuries ago, evolving from warrior shelters to luxurious accommodations with personalized service and design. Despite having endured numerous historical upheavals, the industry confronted a novel challenge: sustainable consumption and business practices. In light of the daily discussions surrounding climate change, the hotel sector cannot afford to be left behind.
This study aimed to investigate the extent to which employees of a Barcelona Hotel Arts by RitzCarlton Brand were engaged with and cognizant of sustainability practices. To accomplish this objective, a combination of qualitative research methods was employed, including the collection of secondary data from a variety of journals, articles, and books, as well as primary data gathered through semi-structured interviews and internal documents of the hotel company. The purpose of these methods was to ascertain the practices present in the hotel and the level of employee familiarity with them.
The findings of this research revealed that the level of employee involvement and general
knowledge of sustainable practices within the hotel was relatively low. Despite the hotel's numerous partnerships and volunteer initiatives, few employees were aware of these efforts. Based on these results, a comprehensive plan was developed by the author to increase employee engagement and heighten awareness of the existing sustainability programs within the hotel company.
