One in 100 children worldwide is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder each year. The condition traits are one of the most complex and can become more pronounced during a visit to a primary care center. However, parents have the opportunity to influence the behavior of their children with ASD during their visits to a primary healthcare center. They can take the lead in preparing their children and familiarizing them with the possible situations and procedures.
The purpose of this bachelor’s Thesis is to assess parent's role in preparing a child with autism spectrum disorder before a visit to primary healthcare center. Objectives of the thesis: to characterize children with autism spectrum disorder from a clinical and psychosocial point of view, and their behavioral challenges. To indicate challenges a child with autism spectrum disorder may encounter during primary healthcare center visits. To identify what strategies parents use when preparing a child with autism spectrum disorder before a primary healthcare center visit. To assess collaboration with parents and healthcare professionals during visits with children with autism spectrum disorder.
Analysis of Lithuanian and foreign scientific literature. A quantitative study method was used to review the preparation of parents of children with ASD before visiting a primary health care center. The respondents of the study were parents of children with ASD. The study involved 72 respondents. The study was conducted using an online survey questionnaire and analysis of result percentages.
A quantitative study revealed that the main difficulties experienced by children with ASD during the visit were negative emotions, communication problems, time management, and social interactions. Parents prepare their children using visual aids and role plays and explain the visit process in simple language. In collaboration with the nurses, parents mainly talk to the nurse about what behavior can be expected from a child with ASD and provide information to the nurses before the visit about the child's communication aspects, methods, and sensory stimuli.
