Nurses face significant emotional challenges in providing end-of-life (EOL) care, making specialized emotional competence training crucial. This literature review explores the impact of patient death on nurses and highlights the importance of addressing moral considerations in EOL care. The review underscores the potential repercussions of insufficient emotional training, which can affect the quality of EOL patient and family care.
By addressing four main themes, nurses can better manage their emotional well-being, mitigate workplace stress, and provide optimal care throughout the EOL journey for patients and families.
The review acknowledges limitations, such as the need for diverse perspectives from patients, family members, and healthcare professionals, and recognizes the influence of cultural and religious backgrounds on experiences. Recommendations for future research include longitudinal studies, direct observation of nurses, and the development of evidence-based interventions to support nurses in delivering superior EOL care.
